Well 24 hours and 3 capsules later later all is fine...
I was a little concerned as someone on the sulphite forum had a bad reaction when he took it so I kept my epipen and the phone near for a while when i took the first one.
I think his reaction may have been an anxiety one as I had to stop myself going into a panic attack with a lot of strict self talk!
Now I know I can tolerate it ok I will do some experimenting with some high phenol/sals foods over the next few weeks.
My insides definitely felt much much better all day yesterday and this morning so even if it helps me digest /utilise my food better then that is good even if it doesn't stop my itching etc!!!
I realised after posting that some new lurkers may not know what I am going on about and what No Fenol is
    here are two links:
    http://www.enzymestuff.com/nofenolfile.htm

    http://houstonzymes.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=hni01&Product_Code=HN003s&Category_Code=nof

There is also a product called Phenol Assist which is similar
    http://www.kirkmanlabs.com/products/enzymes/phenol/phenol_bp835.html

Rita.. I see from old posts that you/WT have taken No Fenol??
Do you still take it? How did you get on?
I think there has been some controversity in the press in the distant past about No Fenol because they mistakenly assumed that it "eliminates" phenols... I guess the name is misleading as what it actually is supposed to help you do is "use" and assimulate phenols safely by breaking them down into "safe" components that the body can handle. I think the name of the Phenol Assist product is more descriptive,

    I will keep you informed.

Hey Lindy, I still take them whenever I am going to eat some fresh fruit or berries. They do not help with the food colorings or artificial stuff. They only help to break down the fiber in the real fruit to improve the overall digestion. They work well for me.

    Lo all!
I have been using the No Fenol for about a week now and am pleased with it.
I am taking it along side probiotics and am really pleased with the results so far.
I have had no ill effects at all from either.
I am taking the No Fenol everytime I eat fruit/vegetables or something containing carbohyrate (so each time I eat lol) At meal times I have a whole capsule and if I have a snack I open a capsule and sprinkle a little on the fruit etc. It is totally tastless.
My unhappy stomach is now a much happier stomach....the "kicked" feeling has gone and I have lost most of the bloated gurgling feling I had and my bms are more normal (sorry - too much information! )
Best of all I feel so much better ... how can I describe it.. calmer? steadier? more "normal"?. I can see why it helps kids with ADHD, it has certainly "normalised" my mood.... It is very difficult to define but I feel like more like "me" again and am not getting wound up and upset about things.....
I ate some green beans the day before yesterday which have in the past given me terrible stomach ache and back ache and all I had was the merest hint of a stomach /back ache. Next time I will increase the No Fenol I had with them as it wasn't a full capsule to see if this helps further.
On the "allergy" side... I still have a constant stuffy nose, I had mild itching from the carrots (salicylates) I had last night but the itching was much milder than it normally would be.
According to the reading I have done the No Fenol seems to be very safe to take and if you take more than you need the body just excretes it as being and enzyme it is only activated when it meets the substance it is supposed to work with. Otherwise it stays inert and passes out of the body.
It works on the cell walls of all carbohydrate foods including fruits and vegetables (but not on proteins) to enable the body to process phenolic foods better.
I am intending to continue with it and try out different foods including some I know I have problems with. Raspberries are next on the list Teddy!
I am doing a lot of research at the moment and there seems to be a lot of info around indirectly linking sulfite/salicylate/ phenol/liver/ allergy/chemical sensitivity/ thyroid problems etc etc to leaky gut and candida problems so my aim at first is to work to "heal my gut" to see what effect this has on my sensitivities.
My next supplements are to be milk thistle and glutamine.

Really interesting hearing about the links to each thing Lindy. Keep up the research you are doing a great job and glad to hear the No Fenol is working out for you and it sounds really hopeful. Let us know how you get on with the raspberries. Good to know that the excess of No Fenol if any just passed through the body and out so not causing any imbalance in the body with anything else.

Take care Lindy and hope you have a good weekend. I am off to Perth this evening to see Deacon Blue in concert so quite looking forward to it. Had another concert to go to last night but wasnt well enough to go so my Dad went instead!!!!

Funny how all these things you want to go to come along at the same time.

    Lindy,
Been reading your posts and there is so much in common with the effects I have been having too. I also suspected leaky gut syndrome was perhaps my problem. Hives and brain fog every day. Since sticking to the strict elimination diet for two weeks, discovered how much better I felt after four days, so continued. Started adding back on a three day basis after that. I discovered that coffee (even de-caff) gives me headaches. Unfortunately hives have been with me all through the non sals diet, so now at a bit of a loss to know what to think. Amines I suspect as well as - sulphites - (make me cough). I will try and find No Fenol and see what happens. Thanks for that. I feel that you are on the right path working to heal the gut. Probiotics have now become part of my routine too. I'll be interested to see how you get on with milk thistle and glutamine. We can all learn from your research. Thanks again.
I discovered that the drug the dentist gives to me gives me migraine the following day. Will have to ask what he gave to me on Friday. Luckily it was'nt a bad one - vision problem for 15 minutes, followed by a light headache for about an hour.(Had a root canal, so injections unavoidable).
    Good luck with your trials.

    Hi Wendy
I am OK with very (very) weak organic black coffee.
You can order No Fenol from the Houston Pharmaceuticals site. There is powder or capsules. I have the capsules but I open them and shake the powder on to food. I can then just use a little bit if I am having a snack such as a banana. The powder is completely tasteless.
If you have sulphite problems then the dental injections may be a problem (as you have found out) as they all contain sodium metabisulphite as a preservative in the adrenaline that is in the injection. There is just one dental injection that I know of called Carbocaine Plain (without vasoconstrictor) that people on the Sulphite forum have used with no problems.
I haven't been brave enough to go back to the dentist after some traumatic treatments a while back so haven't tried it myself.
Teddy has had some dental treatment recently. I am sure she will chip in here..

Lindy, I didn't know that the body excretes the excess no fenol enzyme. Interesting. Hi All

I can't attend my 'normal' dentist and was referred to a hospital where I go to a latex-free clinic. The dental consultant there is a wonderful lady and she knows all about my other allergies. I dont know what the injections I get are but obviously safe for me with no sodium metabisulphites. No matter how severe my sulphites allergy is as Lindy mentions sodium metabisulphite is the preservative in the epipen I still have to use it or have it administered quickly and the emergency services are called and they then inject with an antidote injection.

So with all the different allergies it is difficult to live with it all but just take each day at a time and hope for the best. Also have sals intolerance - I must say sals wise I am doing well so pleased with this.

    Take care all

    Hi Stace

The antidote is only for people with sulphite allergy as sodium metabisulphite is the preservative in the epipen. Not a worry for you if you dont have sulphite allergy.

I've been reading this site for a while but only just got an account. My no-fenol arrived in the post this morning. One of the main things that I want to use it for is so that I can have a cup of tea. However I'm not sure this will work as enzymes are inactivated over 60 degress (C). Has anyone tried it for this? Did it work and how did you take the enzymes (powder in cold water before hand?)

Pardon my ignorance, but what are plant phenolics and how do they relate to salicylate sensitivity?

I made a post a few days ago about my AAT appt and how I've kinda come full-circle back to the sal-sensitivity, and plant phelolics and glutamates were some of my other problem areas.

Just trying to make sense of this mess--trying to get all of these things treated so I can eat and feel normal! It's pretty much impossible for me to avoid the foods I tested allergic to last April, AND all of my newly discovered stuff...:0/

    Hi Lady TS
Salicylates are just one sub set of plant phenols which are natural chemicals in plants. Plants produce chemicals for all kinds of reasons.. salicylates are produced as a chemical defence for plants against pathogens.
Here us a good link for information (you may need to copy/paste it into your address bar)

    Lindy,
Does the cellulose version contain coconut?? I thought I read or saw it on the web page link?
I should have stuck with my carbgest enzyme. Now I am totally out for several days!
    Sylvia :)
  2.
I was surprised also that No Fenol had coconut in it.. and why I stuck with the Phenol Asssist which works slightly.. ie dampens the reactions so that when I take a supplement that I really need , I can get away with it.. There are apparently ways of removing the sals even from high things like coconut.. but I have not tried the No Fenol to know for sure.

I phoned a company called Olympian Labs about their vitamin products which they claim to be sal free.. one had cherry flavour , another lemon.. They said they stood by their products .. I have just ordered alpha lipoic acid fromt them that ordinarily has bothered me ,, but it may not be from sals as I am also amine intoelerant .. and will give it a try in a month.. after this terrible crisis I am going very slowly..

What does the cargest do for you Sylvia?? Is it just for carbs?? Have you found one for proteins or fats??

Interesting information about the coconut oil (NCT oil) but I cannot imagine Houston Enzymes being stupid enough to produce a product that claims to help digest/process salicylates and phenols ...and contains sals itself !

The label claims "No-Fenol may be helpful for digestion of those foods high in phenols and salicylates. Digestion of fruits and vegetables may also be enhanced as No Fenol contains enzymes that break down the components of plants fibres allowing better bio-availibility of nutrients."

We are all different and will tolerate different things.. I get on ok with the No-Fenol and it does seem to help my digestion..but of course it may not be right for others..it's all trial and error

Just to update that I have switched from the No Phenol to TriEnza which is also made by Houston Enzymes.
It has half the amount of No Phenol plus has other enzymes to help digest proteins (including gluten casien & soy) carbs, sugars (including lactose) & fats.
Although it has a small amount of the "coconut derived" oil in the ingredients that some people have been concerned about (as no Phenol also has this) the website does claim that it is salicylate free so presumably the sals have been processed out...
I am tolerating it fine... so if anyone feels they are needing a multi digestive enzyme supplement it could be worth a try.

Hi Lindy /Rita, I'm just starting out with digestive enzymes having read a good book called 'Enzymes for Autism and other Neurological Conditions' by Karen DeFelice (same lady who helps run the enzymestuff.com website). I am one week in having started as recommended in the book with LACTO, made by Enzymedica, as this is a mild broad spectrum enzyme product, and am next going to add in a product which also contains proteases to break down proteins (they recommend GlutenEase). I also started taking a probiotic (Culturelle) at the same time, and in the last two days have added in No-Fenol with veggies and fruit.
I have had no major reactions, but my head does feel a bit swimmy since starting the No-Fenol, however this could also be due to the increased phenols I am putting into my body and perhaps not compensating enough with the enzymes. I have a slight head ache now and last night my mind was racing a bit when I went to bed and had to work hard not to panic and try to relax enough to go to sleep (my usual sals etc reactions are almost exclusively mood/anxiety related) -but I understand that these reactions could be part of the process of detoxing and kick-starting a dodgy digestive system so I'm not too concerned yet, especially as they have been fairly mild so far. And on the plus side I have felt less sleepy today than usual.
Anyway, the reason for my post was to ask a few questions as you are a good few steps ahead of me. My questions are: 1. If you still use a probiotic which brand do you use and are you happy with it? 2. (for Lindy) How are you finding Trienza? 3.Overall to what extent has taking enzymes helped your tolerance to foods? 4. Would you say that you feel that this process is actually helping to heal your gut and resolve underlying problems, or do you feel that it is a just a temporary fix?
Many thanks in advance for your comments. I am very excited about the enzyme possibilities, but I don't want to get carried away which is why I am interested in finding out how things are for you a little way along the line.
    Best wishes, Holly x

i reacted to the NO Fenol.. IT does contain oil of coconut and I believe that is why I was reacting.

I have been taking the competetors enzyme called Phenol Assist.. They are weak for my problems as I am super reactive , but they are keeping me alive as without I would not be able to tolerate any carbs.. millet and rice as they do contain salicylates. I also use these enzymes to be able to tolerate some vitamins which have sals in them.

    Hi Holly
I tried 4 brands of enzymes before I found a brand that I can tolerate (Kirkmans Phenol Assist). They make a significant difference to how many and how much sals and carbohydrate food I can tolerate, but are not a "magic" fix for me. I would suggest trying a few other brands if you are getting symptoms because the Phenol Assist results in no symptoms at all for me - the other brands all caused problems that became worse as I increased the dose.

    Hi Holly & all
I am tolerating the trienza fine. I have just ordered my 2nd bottle..I am taking them mainly to "assist" my digestion and I find that they do help.. I have less bloating, less cramping and the colour of my stools has improved (less bright yellow..) sorry too much information ;O)
I think the only to really way to assess how much they are "helping" would be to stop taking them which I am not at the point of wanting to do yet..
Are the digestive enzymes helping to heal my gut? I really don't know for sure.. but my guess would be that giving the digestive process some "assistance" has got to be a help...and will give my intestines a better opportunity to heal.. which should lead to a better tolerance level in the long term.
I personally don't think that anything we take is going to be a "magic fix" - I am now past the stage of hoping for one..I used to get really excited when I took a new supplement or drug..I now accept that finding the right combination of drugs/supplements to be able to live a fairly "normal" life is the best I can hope for..I don't think with the current position of ss research I am going to totally resolve my "underlying problems" in the foreseeable future and I firmly believe this is genetic ...I would just like to get back to an earlier point where I could tolerate higher levels of sals..
    At the moment I take:
Ketotifen, Trienza digestive enzymes, calcium/magnesium/zinc combo, plus glucosamine sulphate.
With this combination along with a restricted diet (including a few medium or high sals spread very well out)
I stay pretty much well... GI symptoms are much better with only an occasional bout, I can tolerate fragrances better, my itching is mainly under control, my moods are much better,my muscles no longer hurt, I am by no means "cured" - just "managing" the symptoms..
On the subject of autism...(which I firmly believe is related to ss - my grandson has Aspergers) did anyone else see the latest that "they" have now developed a brain scan which detects Autism in 90% of cases? It should be available to the public in a year to so..

Just to add about the Phenol Assist Enzymes..

They also help with destroying the bad candida cells.> THey break these down as well as the sals. Taken away from a carbohydrate meal.

My candida is much better .. I do take alot each day though/.. 6 with my supplements in the am. And 6-8 with each meal to help with the millet and rice.
If they were only stronger then maybe I could add in another vegi other than my lonely celery ... sigh..

Regarding the comments about a suspected genetic cause of our SS issues and the high incidence of autism spectrum disorders in our families, I wanted to include this Scientific American article that I read recently:

    http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=autism-rise-driven-by-environment

I've gone back and forth over the past few years about whether I believe my food intolerance issues are genetic or environmental. I wonder if we can look to autism studies as relevant to our situation (the more I hear about our family members having autism, the more I think we can and should). If so, the medical study summarized in this article makes the case that with autism, an environmental cause is much more likely. The numbers have just risen too rapidly to be due to a genetic problem. Since the early '90s the cases of autism in California, for instance, have risen 600 to 700 percent--even when adjusted for a higher rate of diagnoses due to the increased awareness of the disease. Researchers say that our genes simply don't change that quickly. They also lament the fact that the funding available to study the genetic factors are "10 to 20 times higher" than the research devoted to possible environmental factors.

I just thought that others might find this interesting, though it makes me feel a bit helpless sometimes....

My grandson has Aspergers (the high end of the Autism Spectrum). I have maintained for some time that his condition is linked to mine...
My understanding of genetics is basic (my daugther is doing a Science Degree which includes genetics and I have her books as she finishes with them..
My basic understanding is that we are all born with different genetic tendencies towards certain conditions (autism may be one) but it is lifestyle and enviornmental factors that "turns on" specific genes. ie we could be born with a tendency for cancer/heart disease/autism etc etc, however it is only if the right "trigger" occurs we we develop the conditions we are predisposed to... This explains why some people can smoke all of their lives and not get lung cancer but others do...if you do not have the genetic predisposition you will not get it..
The fact that we are becoming more and more exposed to potential triggers due to enviromental chemicals, lifestyle etc would mean that more people will go on to suffer from conditions that they have a genetic tendency towards..

IN my wonderings I see a link between genes in my family but that it is also environmental in that those genes predispose us to storing all these new hazardous chemicals, heavy metals, toxins .. With poor liver metabolism and kidney function ,, etc etc .. ie whatever it takes for our bodies to detox this stuff we are prone to having our cup full of toxins ,, which leaves no room for proper functioning..

In my family ,, a father who later in life has some similar things to me.. ie irritable bowel, dairy intolerant, fragrance intoerant,. A brother with alcholism which can be linked to gluten sensitivitity etc and he has never proven that to not be true.. A nephew with my other main problem of bipolar mood disorder..

There is a gene that makes it that the body stores more iron.. so why not other chemicals/ metals,,??

Thanks Marie for the choko suggestion..I have not heard of it.. Where do you get yours??

    Hi Nanci
Choko is easy to get at any supermarket or fruit and veg shop in Australia. It's also known as chayote (sechium edule). It is native to central America, Mexico and the West Indies. It is a pear shaped green vegetable that grows on a vine, has a single soft seed and a pear-textured pale green flesh. The taste is bland - so it can be used in both savoury and sweet dishes. It is a good source of vitamin C (6mg per 80g) and in most climates is available all year round.
    Kind Regards
