I guess it it time for an update :o) A positive effect I am now finding is that I am tolerating inhaled perfumes/fabric softeners much better...other people "smells" are not bothering me so much and I am finding that I can now spend more time with people who are "fragranced" than I could. Previously even a short time in a group of people would result in itching that evening followed by a bad stomach the next day. However recently I have had a return of my muscle issues..the ketotifen does not seem to be controlling the muscle sensitivity/aches/soreness... (can't have it all I suppose) I have had this on and off for some time now.. I again had really painful back "cramps" (the muscles really did seem to be cramping in when I moved) and leg problems again. The last time I had this some time ago I linked it to the (large amounts of !) organic white chocolate I was eating. It improved when I stopped eating it. This time I have been baking with organic golden syrup (that dratted sugar again!) and eating some baked goods each day. I have again (sob) cut out the sugar and the muscle problems are improving.... so.. is it sugar/sucrose or is it a co-incidence?? I certainly feel mentally so much better when I am eating foods contining sucrose..but physically it appears it may have a detrimental effect over a period of time.. Of course there is a possibility that the muscle problems are not related to the salicylate issue and are caused by something else. It is too easy to blame everything on salicylates.... On another subject my eldest dd is doing a Science Open University Degree with the aim of going into Medicine when her kids are older. I was leafing through her chemistry text book and it has a chapter on aspirin and how it is metabolised and how it affects the body...It explains prostaglandins, leukotrines, arachadonic acid etc in simple academic terms.. so I am going to borrow her text books after she fininishes with them....she also has some on genetics which may prove useful! I have told her I am relying on her to find us a cure when she is qualified !! LOL Love Lindy xx
What a bugger that your muscle issues are back... but how handy to have all those books at your finger tips and to have a buddying scientist/doc in the family! :)
I had meant to add in my last post that I have noticed a big change in facial/chest/shoulder flushing.. it has been very minimal since starting the trial and i havent had any red blotchiness that usually comes along with it. In my opinion taking ketotifen is worth it just for this ;)
And just on a side note even though Im pretty sure that I dont have a sulphite sensitivity I have been spliting the capsules so see if i has any effect on the new reactions i seem to be having with my eyes etc.
Just thought I would give you an update. Thank you all for your kind words. My son has been off the Ketotifen (Zaditen) after he had a bad illness at the same time. We are using piriten. We are going to the hospital to see a Specialist Children’s doctor on Tuesday. We had to leave his sisters 6th party yesterday as he can not take being around people. We even asked everyone not to wear perfumes, we could not smell any fragrance but after 10 minutes it was warm and he went red and blotchy and I got him out of there quick, probably the hair products and fabric condtioners. He has been going to nursery some mornings when is skin is OK but he is not coping well, and generally gets a build up reaction that day. My wife is determined he is going to have a normal schooling but I am not convinced it is going to be possible. I am not sure what is going to come out of the hospital visit I will keep you posted. Please note my son has been granted a low rate UK disability allowance. Do not know if anyone else is getting government help on this. KInd regards, Steve.
Steve i hope that you get some answers soon! it must be so hard on your family xo
I thought id drop by for an update
Things still seem to be going okay, my lips no longer swell from using toothpaste except for on the odd occasion, I tried on several occasions to use bi-carb but im not a huge fan lol. I think that I still need to avoid wheat and dairy although the wheat reactions are less severe then before I started Ketotifen
I have been adding some raspberries and blueberries to my morning banana and rice milk smoothie (loving the colour!) and my reactions are still there but not as bad as before. Fatigue is still a bit of an issue but i missed taking a tablet the other day and realised how great the difference is!!
I am still hoping that being on Ketotifen for another couple of months might continue to improve my tolerance levels
Ive been away in Devon for a week in our caravan :o) I had hoped to be able to get internet but we were in the middle nowhere and my mobile iternet dongle would not pick up a signal..and the site wifi was rubbish!! Thanks for the updates Steve and Kelza. Steve, How did your son get on with the specialist? Interesting to hear that he has been granted a disability allowance.. Kelza good to hear that you are finding the ketotifen to be a help... I also notice if I forget a tablet or even take one a few hours late... I was really pleased that I managed to find a couple of places to "eat out" while I was away.. both times chicken and chips (fries). In the uk most chips (fries) are preprepared and bagged for catering after being gassed with sulphur dioxide.. a BIG problem for those of us who are sulphite sensiive but both times I asked to speak to someone from the kitchen and established that they actually peeled their own potatoes and the chicken had no additives..so I felt confident enought to eat :o) Love Lindy xx
Well the visit to the specialist in Stafford Hospital went well. He did not know Salicylate was in food, but he was very interested and appears to have good contacts. The specialist got us further appointment to see a Dermatology specialist and Dermatology nurses in Cannock hospital within 2 days. But we went to the Doctors and got a prescription for Betnovate cream also. The doctor said is Skin has eczema and is happy to prescribe steroid creams. We were using Betnovate RD cream on his skin (or 4 in 1 as they sometimes call it) and is it 25% the strength of the real Betnovate. We were only using this sparingly and it was not doing anything. We are using the Betnovate all over daily as advised but the doctors and nurses and my son’s skin has improved dramatically. He can not have this for long but the nurses have also given us Eurmovate which is lower strength to step down to when is skin is perfect. The nurses have also gone through his creams and we have lots. The trouble is they all have chemicals in which he can not have. Also, the base for the creams have emulsifying wax in which is made of plant material. They have given us which they think is good 50:50. You could tell as they were nodding at each other. It is liquid paraffin 50% in white soft paraffin made by J.M.Loveridge Ltd, 6A Kingsway, Off North Way, Andover, Hants. SP10 6LQ. It has only 2 product in both derived from Crude Oil, which is itself derived from animals, so is working well. He is having this 50:50 on 6 times a day. And before and after baths. They have said to only bath him for 5 mins as he will loose the moisture in his skin. We were very suspicious of the Hydromol we were using and we think he has improved through switching to 50:50. His improvement is dramatic with this and he is back at nursery and coping. He does not have any itching in the day or night !!!! Hurray !!!! It has really taken the pressure off..... We are due to go back to the specialist in 2 months and we will see how it goes when we stop the Betnovate and switch to Eurmovate. (Please note Betnovate is only a medium strength steroid cream.) The Dermolgical nurse have also prescribed Ucerax (Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride) for the itching. It is a anti-hitamine and was next to the Ketotifen in there MIMS book which tells them what to prescribe. They said they would not normally prescribe the Ketotifen and left it at that.
I was recently prescribed hydroxyzine for skin itching and bad dermatitis as well as for the antihistamine effect. I have to say that I think it works much better than any of the other that I have taken so far even though I have to take it more frequently, 25mg 3X a day. I'm pleased with the results over anything else that I've taken for my skin and it's improving vastly in the 2 weeks I've been taking it. I haven't been able to compare it to Ketotifen however...
Still doing fine on the ketotifen..feeling well.. Arrgh.. I have put on weight... LOL I have recently been wearing some cropped elasticated trousers as it has been hot and I went to put some normal trousers on the other day that I hadn't worn for a little while and nothing fitted eeek! I don't think this is due directly to the tablets..although "weight gain" is listed as one of the possible side effects. I am conscious that I have been eating more.. so guess who is on a DIET ! A very interesting one considering the small range of foods I can eat lol! Lindy xx
haha, sorry, I have to laugh... It is too paradoxical. Hope it does not bother you too much!
Well, I wanted to report about my "Ketotifen experience" too. I have been able to eat a bit more, but not on a regular basis. If I eat something with sals, most allergy-like symptoms, especially the inmediat ones are either much weaker and partially there is not inmediate reaction at all, which is great. But, my face flares with acne-like pimples the day after and after two to three days of transgressions, my back begins to ache and get stiff and I begin feeling the brain fog and having problems with speach and mood. And of course my weight reacts inmediatly. Three to four days of transgressions mean 6 to 10 pound more on the scale, but at least they go away as soon as I stop transgressing, no matter how many calories I eat, even if i am developing preferences for fatty salty food, what I would have hated no long ago. For me the weight gain correlates with the transgressions... Just saying. I hope it is different for you, you deserve being able to eat more! My hope is that those reactions will fade too..., but for so log I have to wait and keep the restricted diet, but for some exceptions. And I have to say, it is great being able to have at least those sometimes.
I just started ketotifen today for the first time, in addition to a 2.5 mg/day dose of prednisone. I'm cautiously optimistic, based on the reports so far. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences! I'll let you know how it goes.
The chemist here in the Netherlands also took pity on me, with bright red, peeling hives (brilliant!) all over my arms and eyes, and gave me some cetomacrogol cream, which I had never heard of before. It's great so far -- no problems. And actually lets my skin breathe, unlike Vaseline.
Fabi It sounds like your "weight gains" may be excess fluid ?? If the weight goes on when you transgress and goes away when you are good it likely that the extra weight is your body holding more fluid in the cells. I get this when I eat wheat/grains ..I know it is fluid retention because my carpal tunnel syndrome starts up due to the extra pressure on the nerves in my wrists from the fluid being held. Larken..keep us informed of how you do on the ketotifen.. good luck :o) Lindy xx
I thought I would report back on my initial Ketotifen trial. I started taking it 3 days ago with a full 1 mg pill. I felt very drowsy and fought it for about 5 hours, at which point I gave in and went to bed. I should have known better! I'm hypersensitive to most meds. The next day I started on a half pill morning and evening. Much less tired as a result.
I am currently traveling in Peru for work and have few options for foods. I ordered plain grilled chicken last night with french fries. The fries, made from Peruvian yellow potatoes, had skins. I am reacting ever so slightly to something this morning, but a lighter sals response than I've had in the past -- just some limited peeling around the hives on my eyes and arms rather than full-blown red, itchy and painful reaction. I haven't done an official sal test, though, since I'm not sure whether the frying could have tempered or neutralized the sals in the potato skins. So, I am hopeful. I will go slowly.
Oh, forgot to add that I did feel "high" and spacey after eating the potato skin fries -- most likely from the sals. This tells me that the Ketotifen is helping with the itching and hives, but not the more neurological symptoms, which sounds along the lines of what others have reported.
Hi Larken Peru? How exciting :o) I managed to eat a whole dish of potato fried wedges with their skins on in an organic cafe a few weeks ago without any reaction :o) Hopefully your tolerance level will improve like mine.. Lindy xx
good luck! And do not give in too quickly. I was very tired for the first 10 days or so, but after that, the tiredness went back. just in case,be carefull with ceviche, they put loads of glutamat in it...
Hi Lindy, i think you are right, with the fluid retention, it is the only logical explanation and I know this carpal tunnel feeling, also in the hips pressing the ciatic nerve, nice, nice.
Anyway, I am definitely improving, reactions are becoming less and less. Two days ago I "needed" that ice cream aftwer watching football/soccer... After that I came into a "flash" were I could not stop eating until yesterday evening (it was not a "binge", it was my body asking for more). Of course I did not go for the steak or chicken but for more ice cream, wine gums, fruit... My point being that this time my face did not balloon as it would have done some weeks ago and today my skin does not show. Still, I am paying for that one, specially with brain fog and equilibrium problems but much less than I would have had to, and specially almost no pain. I think it is also because I manged to stay away from grains this time.
I am considering increasing the dosage to 3mg/day or even the full dosis of 4mg/day. For now I will see how it goes at this dosage with the enzymes and the phenol assist companion.
I'm back :) have been super busy lately and haven't had a chance to get on the forums. Exciting to see a few other people trialling Ketotifen! And it does look rather positive.
Lindy I have found that I am also handling smells much better then I used to, doesn't seem to bother me instantly like it used too. I am still on 2mg a day and don't have any related tiredness anymore although I still have to be careful not to push myself too much or I am tired for a couple of days. I do manage a very short workout every couple of days but am still having a bit of trouble with muscle recovery.. could be due to diet restrictions
I am finding that they brain fog, memory problems, and other more neurological symptoms only come back when I get tired. Í'm still avoiding most muscle aches, crawling skin, itching, problems, they seem to be fairly well under control.
When my doc asked how the trial was going I told her that Ketotifen was keeping me sane :) which I exactly what it does for me... also my anxiety seems 99% linked to my SS which now makes so much sense to me.. before I felt like two completely different people in one body. I am known for being laid-back which I feel is the real me and then there is this anxious stress head that pops up from nowhere :) that along with the other symptoms made me feel like I was crazy LOL
Fabi and Larkin.. welcome to the trial! I have found that over the couple of months that i have been on the capsules that the symptoms decrease, seems to build up in the system. Teefee who drops in the forums occasionally has been on Ketotifen for 18 months (correct me if im wrong!) and I remember reading that she said she found that she didnt get consistant results until she had been taking it for around four months. Fabi how long have you been taking them? it might be worth trialling the lower dosage for a while longer?
I have found that I have put on a little weight also (not fair considering I fly out for Greece in less then a week, my bikini is not happy ;) ) my doc said that Ketotifen stops you from realising that you are full and thats why weight gain can be a side effect. I think it could also be due to fluid... will be interesting to see if it continues over time. I have (am trying) to go gluten and dairy free as I know that I have problems with them. Will have to see if it has an effect on my weight.
Hi Kelza, thanks. Yeah, I decided on staying on the current dosage for some months, so the trial is fair and I do not take more meds than I really need. I am not the most patient person on earth, especially when it comes to trying to get rid of these intolerances. Anyways I will keep it that way and see how it goes. I have been feeling am a bit spacy, but the brain fog is much less, even if it comes back whenever I am not completely careful. Hopefully they will go away too.
Good to see, it is working so well for you. It makes hope. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for your comments, Lindy and Fabi. I have been taking the Ketotifen for two weeks now. My reactions are better. This morning I ate several large chunks of papaya with only neurological symptoms, so that's good! I would really, really like the brain fog to go away, too. We'll see how it goes.
The only thing is that the sleepiness has stuck around. I've cut back to a half milligram twice a day. I am also feeling a bit down and moody. Is this sals or Ketotifen side effect? Not sure. I'll try to be good for a few days and see if the heavy mood lightens.
I haven't been here for a while, because I've been finishing my PhD and writing exams.
I've been on Ketotifen now for 20 months, and I can eat most things in small quantities now without any hives, breathing problems, coughing or swelling. I try to avoid high Sal foods, or large quantities of med sals. My worst reaction is leg cramps when I drink wine. Beer doens't have the same effect.
It took me about 6 months to have such low reactions.
I also gained weight, but one of the reasons is that I eat the things I couldn't before (especially chocolate!!!) The strangest thing is that I am now hypersensitive to fats and chocolate in my intestines; I get VERY gassy. My body's telling me something!!
Hi all I've been away for a week in Cornwall (for non UK members this is a lovely County far South West England with lots of cute fishing villages) It's my favourite part of England. We stayed in a mobile home on someones land on a cliff overlooking the sea. Lovely.. lots of cute little baby bunnies in the field next to us.. The first day I had slight problems..my voice went croaky (one of my first signs) and I had mild stomach cramps and "jumpiness" to sounds..The caravan smelled terribly of cleaning products (the poor woman who owned it had obviously spent ages cleaning it). By the second day I was fine.. I couldn't find anywhere to eat out but did manage to eat a couple of organic ice creams :o) I am tackling the weight gain.. I dropped a couple of lbs before I went away and I was careful what I ate while away so should still be ok. My leg muscle problems have improved so much I was able to go clifftop walking - we walked 2.5 miles (and 2.5 miles back) along the clifftop with lots of steep uphills and downhills! I would not have been able to that a few months ago :o) Good to hear everyones progress on the ketotifen - keep up the reporting :o) Now I have been on the ketotifen for some time I must start increasing further the amount of sals I eat and see what happens.. watch this space.. Lindy xxx
Another update: I've been on Ketotifen for about 3.5 weeks now. I'm taking .5 mg twice daily (down from 1 mg 2/day because I was getting too drowsy). My reactions are much less now. I'm on vacation for a few days in Paris and was way too tempted to pass on the goodies, so over the past two days I've had:
-- a tablespoon...ok, two....of fig jam "with citron essence" -- a gluten-free vanilla madeleine -- TWO chocolate macaroons made with almond flour -- I also smelled about 20 teas yesterday (fruit, spices) in a wonderful tea shop
And very little reaction!! Yeah! I have had a little stomach/intestinal pain, but nothing too serious. Certainly not breaking out in bright red hives, as would have happened a month ago.
Glad everything is going well for those on the ketotifen trial. I haven't found a better solution, but it's not 100%. I have to be careful with H S foods, especially wine, tomato, melon. I haven't tried everythiing, and avoid high sal foods, but I can manage normal lettuce, the occasional pizza, and a little bit of most things if I don't go OTT.
Rita, LOL! No, my PhD is in Education! Nothing to do with Chemistry or Biology.
I started ketotifen a few days ago. The first day it made me very drowsy and slept really well that night, but since then I've had difficulty sleeping and seem to spend the night feeling wide awake. Has anyone else found this or just the drowsiness? Also how long will it take to get into the system before I can start trying to introduce other foods back into my diet?
Hi Deb (strange comment above from Buster!) Sorry to hear you were having afew problems with the Ketotifen.. how are things now? Are you sleeping better? I waited a few weeks to let my body get used to the new drug before I introduced foods. Teefee said it took quite a while for her tolerance to increase. I've been away in our caravan again to Devon (met up with my youngest daughter and her family) :o) I actually managed to eat out 3 times, once a baked potato in a Farm shop cafe, then at a pub run by a relative of my son in law and the other day we all stopped at a pub for lunch. There was absolutely nothing on the menu I could eat.. I asked the girl a the bar about the chips (fries) and she said that they came pre prepared in bags (uggg) so I asked to speak to the chef and explained my allergies. He had actually heard of sulphites (!) but didn't know they occur naturally as well as an additive. He agreed to my request to peel some potatoes to make some chips but we couldn't find anything on the menu I could eat as everything had onion or garlic etc. After a while he came out again to the table and asked if I would like him to cook me a plain steak as well as the chips :o) What a nice man! it was delicious :o) It is definitely worth asking to speak to someone from the kitchen if you want to eat out.. Lindy xx
